The Cool of the Evening: A Love Story by Paula Kurman, Saturday May 11 at 4 pm What a great turnout for our three readings this past weekend, Tara Conklin and Ana Reyes on Friday, Joan Cohen on Saturday and Bea Gates on Sunday. This coming weekend we’ve only got one, but it’s going to be, as our old friend Jim Bouton used to say, “One of the Greats”. The Cool of the Evening: A Love Story is the memoir Paula Kurman promised her husband Jim she would write before he died. We baseball fans of a certain vintage, as Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas puts it, already know a lot about Jim Bouton, the Twenty Game Winner who pitched so brilliantly in the World Series for some of those iconic New York Yankee teams in the early sixties. We also know the iconic sports book that was way more than just a sports book, Ball Four. What we didn’t know (well, some of us did, because we had the pleasure of knowing them when they came to make their home here in The Berkshires) was the story of his marriage to and incredible life with the (other) great love of his life Paula Kurman. Now here it is, in living color! Paula has written one of the loveliest stories I’ve ever read. I can hear their voices, Jim’s especially in Paula’s words. The title of the book “The Cool of the Evening” comes from Jim’s favorite pitching coach, Johnny Sain, who used to say it described the feeling of satisfaction that came from a successful day on the mound. Jim had that, many times. Now Paula has it, too. I invite you all to share the joy she has provided. Saturday May 11 at 4 pm at The Bookstore. Thanks for reading, Matt |
